Tobacco smoking is an age old habit of human being. Health risks associated with this habit are most adverse. Cigarette smoke is a complex mixture of thousands of compounds. In order to reduce the intake of toxic gases while smoking cigarettes, filters made up of cellulose acetate is used worldwide. Cigarette filters incorporated with Activated Carbon are well known for their selective reduction of many vapour phase smoke toxicants.
Incorporation of activated carbon into cigarette filters is achieved by several methods. Most commonly used designs are multi components filters with a plain cellulose acetate at the mouth end. For dual filters, a filter segment containing Activated Carbon is combined with cellulose acetate.
Activated Carbon made from many carbonaceous materials can be used in manufacturing cigarette filters. Performance of the carbon depends on the pore volume and pore size distribution of the Activated Carbon. Activity of the carbon is increased by oxidation process using steam activation. Steam activated coconut shell based activated carbon is considered as the best material for manufacturing cigarette filters. Coconut shell based activated carbon has the highest micro porosity compared to other types of activated carbon. It also has high degree of hardness and abrasion resistance.
